From gold extraction to particle physics: South Dakota's Homestake mine now hosts world-leading underground research

The former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, has been transformed into the Sanford Underground Research Facility, where scientists conduct experiments on dark matter, neutrinos and other frontier topics at a depth of 4,850 feet.

The Homestake Gold Mine, once the largest and deepest gold producer in North America, ceased operations in 2001 after yielding about 41 million ounces of gold and 9 million ounces of silver. In 2006, a $70 million donation from businessman T Denny Sanford, combined with land from Barrick Gold Corporation and over $40 million from South Dakota, enabled the creation of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory, now called the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF).

Situated 4,850 feet below ground, SURF hosts researchers from dozens of nations who investigate dark matter with the LUX-Z EPLIN (LZ) detector, search for neutrinoless double-beta decay via the Majorana Demonstrator, and continue Raymond Davis Jr.'s pioneering neutrino work. The underground environment also supports studies of extremophile microbes, geothermal fluid dynamics, and commercial engineering projects such as Caterpillar's MineStar technology. SURF thus links a historic mining site to cutting-edge science across physics, biology and engineering.
