From Oct. 1 LPG buyers must complete Aadhaar biometric check for subsidised refills
Starting October 1, Indian households can only book LPG cylinders at the subsidised price after completing biometric Aadhaar authentication; those who do not will still receive gas at market rates.
Effective Oct. 1, the government will require biometric Aadhaar authentication for any domestic LPG refill booked at the regulated price that includes the subsidy. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reports that 274.3 million households, or 89.9% of the total, have already completed the verification. Those already authenticated face no change, while the remaining consumers can still purchase LPG at market rates via OMC websites, apps, WhatsApp chatbots or IVRS, subject to cylinder availability.
The policy is intended to prevent subsidy leakage to duplicate or commercial users and to direct benefits to genuine households. OMCs have been conducting a nationwide Aadhaar drive since Oct. 2023, extending the deadline several times before settling on the Oct. 1 rule. Consumers may authenticate through delivery personnel, distributor showrooms, or the OMC’s mobile applications such as IndianOil ONE, HelloBPCL, and HP PAY.
