From traffic-control entrepreneur to Top Gun stunt pilot, Jonathan Spano soars on a $1 M-a-day empire
Jonathan Spano, whose traffic-control firm earns over $1 million daily, funded his own flight training and now flies stunt sequences for Top Gun: Maverick.
Born to a blue-collar family in California, Jonathan Spano and his brother launched a traffic-control venture in 1995 that has expanded to over 50 U.S. locations and now brings in more than $1 million each day. A tax-saving suggestion led Spano to buy a Cessna, sparking a personal aviation journey that progressed to a private jet and a $2 million helicopter for aerial filming. Partnering with aerial coordinator Fred North, he adapted an Embraer Phenom 300 to house dual camera systems, securing FAA certification in time for Top Gun: Maverick.
Alongside veteran pilot Kevin LaRosa Jr., Spano flew most of the film’s high-profile jet and carrier sequences, winning a Screen Actors Guild stunt award. His specialized jet has since been used for ads for NetJets, FlexJet, Gulfstream, Embraer and Delta, as well as work for the U.S. Air Force and National Geographic’s Emmy-nominated “America the Beautiful.” Spano says his story shows that perseverance and strategic reinvestment can turn a childhood dream into a high-profile career.
