From Trash Bins to Senior Leadership: Disney’s Lessons for Every Business

Cheryl Christensen recounts how a 37-year Disney career that began with bussing tables shaped her leadership philosophy, now applied at Tulsa’s Gathering Place.

Cheryl Christensen spent nearly four decades at Disney, beginning with entry-level jobs like bussing tables and emptying trash before advancing to director positions in learning, development and human-resources services. Her passion for guest service led her to Disney’s Guest Communications team, where she handled complaints, gathered real-time feedback and presented recommendations to then-Disneyland president Paul Pressler, whose actions improved the visitor experience.

In an interview on Amazing Business Radio, she highlighted three takeaways: the power of Disney’s employee-first culture, the importance of recognizing untapped talent, and the need to close the feedback loop with customers promptly. After retiring from Disney, she returned to her hometown of Tulsa to become senior vice president of operations at The Gathering Place, a 66-acre public park. She now applies the same principles to create an engaging, inclusive community space.
