FSSAI launches legal case against Nestle India over infant formula claims

India's food regulator has filed a lawsuit against Nestle India, alleging that its NAN Excella Pro Stage 1 and Lactogen Pro 1 formulas breach labeling and biotin standards.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India examined the two infant nutrition products and the promotional content displayed on online marketplaces. It found that the claims made about the formulas were false and that a laboratory re-test showed the products did not meet the biotin levels required by the 2020 regulations. Consequently, the agency has initiated legal proceedings against Nestle India for non-compliance.

Why it matters

Ensuring accurate labeling of infant formula protects vulnerable babies and holds manufacturers accountable.
