FSSAI orders halt on Nestle Low Fat Dairy Whitener at Delhi luxury hotel

India's food safety regulator declared a Nestle Low Fat Dairy Whitener sample from The Lalit hotel unsafe and banned its sale.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced that a laboratory analysis of Nestle's Low Fat Dairy Whitener, collected from The Lalit hotel in New Delhi, labeled the product unsafe and substandard under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Consequently, the regulator issued a notice to Nestle and ordered an immediate prohibition on selling the whitener at the hotel. Nestle has been provided the opportunity to contest the findings within the legally defined period.

The action adds to recent scrutiny of Nestle India, including legal proceedings over a baby food sample and concerns about biotin levels in its infant formula. The FSSAI supplied the lab report to the company for reference and compliance. The ban applies specifically to the product's distribution at the identified hotel location.

Why it matters

Consumers rely on safe dairy products, and a regulator's ban signals potential health risks and impacts Nestle's market presence.
