FSSAI orders strict cold-chain handling for all perishable food products
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued an advisory requiring food businesses to keep items like khoa, paneer, meat and fish at prescribed temperatures throughout the supply chain.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India released an advisory directing all food business operators to transport perishable commodities such as khoa, paneer, meat and fish under regulated temperature settings across the entire supply chain. Operators must adhere to hygiene standards, use clean, covered transport vehicles, and employ food-grade primary and secondary packaging to protect products from contamination.
Detailed records and traceability of each consignment are required. The authority has asked state food safety officers, Indian Railways and regional FSSAI directors to intensify inspections and take action, including seizure and destruction, against violations. Failure to maintain the prescribed temperatures is deemed a breach of the licensing regulations and a risk to public health.
Why it matters
Ensuring a cold chain prevents microbial growth in perishable foods, protecting consumer health across India.
