FSSAI to tighten rules for quick-commerce food platforms amid crackdown
India's food regulator plans stricter requirements for online grocery services like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart and Amazon Now as it steps up enforcement.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said it will impose tighter obligations on quick-commerce platforms, requiring them to display product manufacturing, expiry and batch information and to hold sellers accountable for misleading claims. Additional proposals include mandatory photographs and location details for dark kitchens and stricter inspections of dark stores, especially for frozen foods. Over the past months, regulators have taken action against companies such as Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, Flipkart and Amazon India for violations ranging from misbranding to selling prohibited items.
The agency has also increased scrutiny of manufacturers, hotels and restaurants, conducting roughly 700,000 inspections between April and September, nearly double the previous year. State food and drug agencies are being urged to step up oversight, while major food brands have begun challenging regulator notices in court.
Why it matters
Stricter rules could improve safety and transparency for millions of Indian consumers buying groceries online.
