Fukushima resumes full peach shipments to Taiwan, first since 2011 disaster

Fukushima Prefecture has restarted full peach exports to Taiwan, planning to ship about 4.5 tons by September 11.

Fukushima Prefecture announced the complete resumption of peach exports to Taiwan, marking the first full-scale shipment since the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear incident forced a halt. Around 4.5 tons of peaches, packed in 40 boxes weighing roughly 200 kg, are slated for delivery by September 11, after Japan lifted import bans on its food products last November. The fruit will be flown from the Toyosu wholesale market in Tokyo and depart from Narita airport, ultimately reaching department stores across Taiwan.

Prior to the disaster, Taiwan received 18.5 of the 28.8 tons exported by Fukushima in 2010. Trial shipments in 2023 and 2025 proved safety but remained limited. Yoshiyuki Fujino of JA Fukushima Mirai welcomed the development, saying it restores producer confidence and elevates the brand’s value.

Why it matters

Restarting peach exports revives a pre-disaster market, supporting Fukushima farmers and strengthening Japan-Taiwan trade.
