FX/Hulu Launches ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’ Spotlighting 1990s L.A. Rap
FX/Hulu’s new series “The Drop: A Snowfall Saga” follows former Snowfall characters as they navigate the early-1990s West Coast rap scene in South Central Los Angeles.
“The Drop: A Snowfall Saga” arrives on FX/Hulu as a spin-off of the crime series Snowfall, re-uniting Wanda Bell (Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John). Wanda, fresh from detox, balances a used-car job with an internship for former D-boy DG, who runs a fledgling hip-hop label. She discovers rapper Artillery and pushes her cousin Lamar Kinsey, a gifted DJ, toward a breakout collaboration.
The narrative portrays the early-1990s West Coast rap boom as a potential lifeline for South Central residents trapped by gangs and poverty. Supporting characters include Lamar’s grandparents Gerty and “Big Daddy,” and his protector James. Creator Malcolm Spellman uses the backdrop to explore ambition, music, and survival, while performances by Bean and Asante Blackk receive particular praise.
