G7 commits $2.5 billion to fight food insecurity and fund Chernobyl repairs
The G7 announced a $2.5 billion pledge to tackle food insecurity, especially fertilizer shortages, and confirmed €260 million raised for Chernobyl dome repairs.
During the IMF and World Bank gatherings in Bangkok, Roland Lescure announced that G7 members have collectively pledged $2.5 billion to address food insecurity in the most vulnerable nations, with a particular focus on securing fertilizer supplies that have been strained by higher energy costs after the United States' strike on Iran. The World Bank has identified 44 countries at risk of food shortages. In parallel, the G7 reaffirmed its support for Ukraine and confirmed that €260 million ($291 million) has already been raised to repair a dome at the Chernobyl disaster site, which was damaged in Russian attacks in February 2025.
France, one outlet G7 chair, has asked members to help meet the estimated €500 million repair cost, and the United States has pledged $100 million. A further pledging conference is scheduled for Paris in November.
