Gagan Thapa sworn in as Nepali Congress chief, pledges to rebuild trust
Gagan Thapa took the oath as president of the Nepali Congress and vowed to make the party the most trusted political force over the next four years.
After securing 93.9% of the votes at the Nepali Congress’s 15th general convention, Gagan Thapa was sworn in as party president, promising to restore public confidence during his four-year term. Speaking at the party’s central office, he highlighted democracy, self-respect and social justice as the pillars of his leadership and warned that his record will be judged by actions, not rhetoric. Thapa stressed the need to keep the party’s historic legacy relevant for today’s youth and ordinary voters, and pledged to base all decisions on the party’s core values.
He also committed to fostering ideological debate and to measuring success by public trust rather than election tallies. The oath ceremony preceded the election of a new central committee, where 69 women secured seats through quota allocations, though none won non-reserved positions.
Why it matters
The new leadership could reshape Nepal’s main opposition party and influence the country’s political direction.
