Galicia expands 'Excellent Markets' network to boost local trade and tourism

The Xunta de Galicia, together with municipal authorities, has created the Red de Mercados Excelentes to recognise markets that combine modern, sustainable infrastructure with direct links between producers and consumers. Currently, seven markets—Tomiño, Vilagarcía de Arousa, Pontedeume, Carballo, Ribeira, Ponteareas and Tui—hold the label, each offering a mix of fresh food, gastronomy, retail and community services while preserving local identity.

The initiative is part of the Plan Estratéxico do Comercio de Galicia 2025-2030, which targets a total of 25 certified markets by 2030. Ongoing investments are planned for new or renovated facilities in towns such as Bertamiráns, Sanxenxo, Ribadavia, O Carballiño and Xinzo de Limia, focusing on accessibility, energy efficiency and digital tools. By modernising these spaces, the region seeks to sustain proximity commerce, attract visitors and respond to evolving consumer habits.
