Gamma buys Lica to launch its own AI design research lab
Presentation platform Gamma has purchased design startup Lica, aiming to create an in-house research division for AI-driven visual communication.
Gamma, known for its presentation-building software, has acquired Lica, a design startup originally built to convert screenshots and recordings into presentation assets. Founded in 2023 by Priyaa Kalyanaraman and Purvanshi Mehta, Lica later raised $4 million from investors including Accel, South Park Commons and Village Global, and shifted toward producing brand-compliant marketing videos for e-commerce sites. The founders will now lead Gamma’s new design research lab, a unit intended to develop AI models that tailor visual communication to different audiences.
Both companies are backed by Accel and South Park Commons, a connection that sparked the acquisition talks. Gamma’s CEO Lee Grant said the partnership will help the firm move beyond its core presentation offering into more fluid, multimodal formats. The deal reflects a broader trend of consolidation among AI-powered presentation tools, highlighted by OpenAI’s recent purchase of NextSlide.
