Gap CEO Richard Dickson pushes cultural comeback to revive struggling brand

Richard Dickson, Gap’s chief executive since 2023, is betting on cultural collaborations and a new creative director to restore relevance, with early sales gains.

Gap Inc. appointed Richard Dickson as CEO in 2023 following five leadership changes in as many years, and he now argues that a brand cannot rely on product alone to regain relevance. Touring the renovated Manhattan flagship, he highlighted a mix of historic imagery and current celebrity faces, underscoring a push to embed Gap in today’s cultural conversation. To that end, he hired designer Zac Posen as creative director, enlisted Old Navy’s chief creative officer, and rolled out collaborations with figures such as Hailey Bieber, Victoria Beckham and Cardi B. Early indicators show a 10% rise in comparable sales and a viral “Better in Denim” campaign that has amassed 80 million views.

Nonetheless, Guggenheim analyst Simeon Siegel notes that true turnaround will require price power, as the stock is down 20% and the effort remains a “show-me” story. Dickson’s previous success reviving Barbie at Mattel provides a hopeful precedent, but Gap’s revival is still unfolding.

Why it matters

Gap’s cultural-driven turnaround could reshape a legacy retailer and affect investors and shoppers.
