Garda force set to top 14,800 officers as new recruits graduate

Around 200 new Gardaí will be sworn in at Templemore this week, pushing the force above 14,800 members for the first time.

A class of about 200 recruits is slated to graduate from the Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary, which will raise the number of serving Gardaí to more than 14,800, a historic high. The Garda Representative Association, representing over 11,000 rank-and-file members, praised the milestone but warned that growth remains insufficient to meet current policing demands. GRA president Niall Hodgins cited Commissioner Justin Kelly’s admission that the service will continue to depend on overtime until it reaches the 16,500-officer goal, far below the earlier target of 18,000 by decade’s end.

The force has seen a year-on-year increase of 500 officers, enabling expanded high-visibility patrols in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway. However, 400 members have left this year, and a wave of age-related retirements is expected as a result of past recruitment surges. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan reiterated the aim of hitting the highest ever staffing level by year-end, aligning the police-to-population ratio with that of Police Scotland.

Why it matters

The staffing increase affects public safety and the ability of the Garda to meet rising policing demands.
