Gardaí urge young woman seen at Henry Street incident to aid investigation

Police are seeking a woman in her late teens or early twenties who was knocked to the ground during the May 15 incident on Henry Street that led to the death of Yves Sakila.

Gardaí are intensifying their search for a young woman who was knocked to the ground during the May 15 confrontation on Henry Street that ended with the death of Yves Sakila, a man in his mid-30s. The police have already spoken to a male individual involved, but the female witness—described as a white teenager wearing a khaki coat, black crop T-shirt, blue-jean shorts and black Adidas shoes—has not yet been interviewed.

Authorities have asked her to reach out to Store Street Garda Station, the confidential line, or any Garda office. They also believe additional people who were in the area have not yet come forward. Sakila’s death, following a pursuit after a suspected shoplifting at Arnotts, sparked protests involving the Congolese community and broader public, and prompted calls from the Congolese foreign affairs minister and a UN special rapporteur for an urgent independent investigation.

Why it matters

Identifying witnesses is crucial to clarify the circumstances of a death that has sparked public protests and demands for an independent inquiry.
