Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced a $125 million settlement with GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems Inc., the operator of the Garden Grove plastics manufacturing plant where a May 21 chemical leak forced evacuations across Garden Grove, Stanton and surrounding areas. The settlement earmarks up to $100 million to compensate about 50,000 displaced residents and provides $8,471,385.50 to reimburse first-responders who managed the emergency.
GKN will fund a $1.4 million, seven-year monitoring program overseen by one outlet expert to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Additionally, the District Attorney’s Office will receive $15 million in state-law penalties for consumer-protection enforcement. The agreement awaits sign-off by an Orange County Superior Court judge.
Why it matters
