Gas explosion in Częstochowa apartment block prompts arrest of resident
A gas blast damaged windows and the façade of a multi-family building in Częstochowa early Thursday, and police have detained a 66-year-old man believed to be the occupant.
Around 4 a.m., a gas cylinder in a third-floor apartment of a Częstochowa residential block detonated, breaking window frames, glazing and part of the building's façade, and setting nearby fabrics alight. Six fire-engine crews and additional rescue units responded, discovering the cylinder valve had been unscrewed. No occupants were found inside, and early investigations indicated the incident may have been deliberate.
Police identified a 66-year-old man as the likely tenant; he was found close to a downtown store and arrested while appearing intoxicated. Officers are continuing to determine whether he caused the explosion, with further questioning scheduled for the following Monday.
Why it matters
The incident raises concerns about building safety and possible criminal intent behind gas explosions.
