Gas Prices Surge Ahead of Labor Day, Highlighting State-by-State Extremes

Since the Iran war began in late February and the subsequent shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, American motorists have faced higher pump prices, with the national average climbing to $4.15 per gallon. AAA’s data for the week ending September 4 rank California as the most expensive state at $5.81 per gallon, followed by Hawaii and Washington, while Indiana and Texas sit at the bottom with prices near $3.45 and $3.69 respectively.

Compared with the same period last year, most states show price gains ranging from about 20% to over 30%. The agency notes that Labor Day is set to become the costliest on record for gasoline. To mitigate costs, Chevron offers a $1-per-gallon discount for new rewards members, and Maverik provides a 15-cent per gallon rebate through Labor Day.
