Gatwick runway shut after gear fault forces flight abort, causing widespread delays

A landing-gear malfunction forced a Gatwick-originating flight to New York to abort take-off, closing the runway and sparking extensive delays.

Emergency crews responded after the aircraft could not lift off due to a gear issue, but no injuries were reported. Several EasyJet arrivals were rerouted to London Luton and London Stansted. Although runway operations have resumed, passengers should expect continued delays throughout the afternoon. Gatwick currently relies on a single active runway and is evaluating the use of its northern runway on a full-time basis.

Why it matters

The shutdown disrupts travel for thousands and highlights Gatwick's limited runway capacity.
