Gauhati High Court frees suspended DSP Sandipon Garg on bail in Zubeen Garg death probe
The Gauhati High Court granted bail to suspended DSP Sandipon Garg, a cousin of the late singer Zubeen Garg, in the ongoing death investigation.
On Friday, the Gauhati High Court, sitting as a single bench under Justice Rajesh Mazumdar, granted bail to suspended Assam Police DSP Sandipon Garg, who is a cousin of singer Zubeen Garg. Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar said the court issued the bail order without reading the full judgment. This decision comes after the court released co-singer Amritprava Mahanta on a Rs 50,000 bond earlier in the week.
Both officials were detained by the Special Investigation Team of the Assam Police following Zubeen Garg's fatal scuba-diving accident in Singapore on September 19, 2025. The incident also led to the arrest of festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta. In August, the Supreme Court instructed the Assam government to ensure a swift trial, noting that key witnesses are expected to testify soon. Defence counsel Siddharth Dave argued that Garg voluntarily entered the water wearing a life jacket and that Mahanta was not present at the time of the drowning, challenging the prosecution's conspiracy theory.
Why it matters
The bail rulings affect the legal process surrounding a high-profile celebrity death and signal how quickly Indian courts are moving the case.
