Gavin Newsom heads to New Hampshire to rally Democrats before midterms and 2028 race

California Governor Gavin Newsom is spending the weekend campaigning in New Hampshire to aid Democratic candidates ahead of the midterm elections and to raise his profile for the 2028 presidential primary.

Governor Gavin Newsom is returning to New Hampshire this weekend for a series of events aimed at bolstering Democratic candidates ahead of the November midterm elections. He will appear at a rally in Exeter with Rep. Chris Pappas, join a canvassing launch in Nashua alongside gubernatorial candidate Cinde Warmington, and attend a voter-mobilization gathering with Senate candidate Stefany Shaheen. The trip follows an intensive travel schedule that featured appearances at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Munich Security Conference and a clean-energy agreement signing in London, as well as a recent Southern tour of Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Records show the California State Protocol Foundation covered roughly $57,000 in European travel expenses, while Newsom’s federal committees have contributed over $526,000 to New Hampshire Democratic campaigns this cycle. Nationally, his fundraising efforts have exceeded $6.5 million for Democrats. The New Hampshire stop is presented as both a midterm boost for local Democrats and a strategic move to raise his profile for the 2028 presidential primary, where the state ranks third on the Democratic National Committee schedule.

Why it matters

The visit shows how a high-profile governor is using early-state campaigning to influence midterm outcomes and position himself for a future presidential bid.
