Gaza amputees share lost dreams and hope while receiving prosthetics in Jordan
Three young Palestinians who lost limbs in Gaza describe their injuries and aspirations as they receive prosthetic care at a centre in Amman.
Mahmoud Abou Nusair, a 15-year-old from Deir al-Balah, was struck in the right leg by a bullet on October 31, 2025 and later underwent a below-knee amputation after his wound worsened. Seventeen-year-old Zuhdi Abou Shanab lost his whole right leg in a strike on September 8, 2025 that killed nine people; failed attempts to repair damaged arteries and veins led to amputation. Sixteen-year-old Abdulrahman Rihan lost the use of his legs when his family home in Jabalia was bombed on January 12, 2025, and his father Imad Rihan also sustained a serious leg injury. The three youths, along with other Palestinian amputees, are receiving prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation at a centre in Amman operated by the Restoring Hope Society, and they each express hopes of returning to Gaza despite the trauma they have endured.
