Gaza conducts mass burial for 50 Palestinians amid ongoing war casualties

At least 50 Palestinians were interred in a mass funeral in Gaza City after their bodies were recovered from recent air-strike rubble.

A mass burial in Gaza City interred at least 50 Palestinians whose remains were recently retrieved from the debris of Israeli air strikes in neighborhoods including Tal al-Hawa, Zeitoun, Sabra, Sheikh Radwan and Shati. The deceased came from several families, notably the al-Sawafiri, al-Batniji and Gharbiya households. Gaza’s Civil Defence estimates that about 8,000 residents are still missing, buried under collapsed structures, while rescue crews operate with only one excavator, slowing recovery.

Munir al-Bursh, director general of Gaza’s Ministry of Health, urged the entry of heavy equipment and forensic resources to aid identification. The funeral occurred as Israeli forces continue to breach a cease-fire pact, which has resulted in at least 1,266 Palestinian deaths and 4,200 injuries since its inception. Earlier, a Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya met Qatar’s prime minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, who praised Hamas’s commitment to a U.S.-backed disarmament proposal, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the plan. The ongoing humanitarian crisis has left roughly 90 % of Gaza’s infrastructure destroyed.

Why it matters

The funeral highlights the continuing human toll and humanitarian challenges in the Gaza conflict.
