Walaa, a 30-year-old mother of five, survived a delayed explosion of a drone-dropped bomb that killed her husband, all her children and six other relatives while they were sheltering in Gaza City after fleeing bombardment in Beit Hanoun. She sustained severe injuries and spent five months in Al-Quds Hospital, where treatment was hampered by resource shortages. UN OCHA reports that, as of August, at least 274 people have been killed and 1,134 injured in 580 incidents involving unexploded ordnance, averaging ten injuries per one outlet.
The majority of the injured are civilians, especially children, according to UNMAS officials. International demining groups lack permission to enter Gaza and remove the weapons, restricting them to identifying hazards and teaching residents how to recognize them. Over 1,000 explosive items have been catalogued since October 2023, but funding and authorization constraints keep large-scale clearance out of reach.
