Gaza hospitals risk shutdown as generator fuel supplies are exhausted

The Palestine Health Ministry warned that Gaza’s hospitals may lose power because oil for their generators has run out.

The Palestine Health Ministry announced that Gaza’s hospitals are on the brink of power loss after oil supplies for their electricity generators were depleted. It said the few generators still functioning are operating under complex engineering constraints and face imminent mechanical breakdowns, which would disrupt essential life-saving services. Each facility requires over 2,500 litres of oil monthly, and limited emergency shipments cannot sustain the prolonged operating hours and urgent maintenance demands.

The ministry urged all relevant parties to fulfill humanitarian obligations by ensuring the swift entry of fuel and necessary spare components. This warning comes amid widespread damage to Gaza’s infrastructure and ongoing ceasefire violations that have already caused extensive casualties and destruction.

Why it matters

Power loss would cripple vital medical care for Gaza’s population amid ongoing conflict.
