Gaza mothers rely on health centre for breastfeeding support amid war hardships

In Deir el-Balah, Gaza, mothers like Eman Huneidq attend the Mother and Child Corner at Hikr al-Jame’ Health Centre for guidance on nursing their infants despite severe displacement and scarcity.

Amid ongoing Israeli strikes, displaced families in western Deir el-Balah turn to the Mother and Child Corner at Hikr al-Jame’ Health Centre for lactation counselling. Eman Huneidq, 38, who battles diabetes and clotting issues, struggled with cracked nipples and expensive formula until the centre’s specialist, Sabreen al-Buhaisi, helped her resume regular breastfeeding and manage her diet with limited resources. The facility serves roughly 400-500 women monthly, extending education to partners and relatives to foster a supportive environment.

Another attendee, 23-year-old Hiba al-Masri, lost a newborn during the conflict and now cares for a three-month-old son in an overcrowded tent, yet credits the support for her child’s recovery. Staff also address food insecurity by recommending low-cost proteins like lentils and providing supplements, while a mental-health team assists mothers coping with trauma. Despite the centre’s safe-space reputation, mothers continue to confront inadequate water, sanitation and shelter conditions outside its walls.

Why it matters

It shows how essential health services sustain vulnerable mothers and infants in war-torn Gaza.
