Gaza’s Child Amputees Face Endless Prosthetic Delays as Israeli Restrictions Tighten

Gaza children who have lost limbs are stuck with ill-fitting prosthetics because Israeli blocks essential parts, forcing repeated surgeries and long waits for evacuation.

In Gaza, growing amputee children such as 11-year-old Abdul-Rahman al-Nashash and 10-year-old Mahmoud al-Darbali are forced to use prosthetics that no longer fit, as Israeli restrictions prevent the import of necessary components. Al-Nashash lost his leg after an airstrike shattered his foot; after a five-month surgery trip to Jordan he returned to start rehabilitation, but his bone has already outgrown the device and another operation is needed.

Al-Darbali’s hip-level amputation left him without any suitable prosthetic, and he remains dependent on crutches while awaiting a medical evacuation that has not been approved. Doctors cite bone overgrowth and lack of materials as major hurdles, and WHO figures indicate over 5,000 Gaza limb losses since October 2023, with only a fraction fitted with prostheses. Humanitarian agencies report shipments of prosthetic parts are repeatedly blocked, and the clearance process for patients to be treated abroad is slow, leaving thousands of children in chronic pain and limited mobility.

Why it matters

It shows how supply bans and evacuation delays leave Gaza’s child amputees in chronic pain and without functional prosthetic care.
