GCC Nations Send Record $161 Billion in Worker Remittances, Surpassing Major Economies
The GCC Statistical Centre reports that workers' remittances from GCC countries reached about $161 billion in 2025, the highest worldwide.
Data released by the GCC Statistical Centre shows that in 2025 the combined outward worker remittances from GCC member states hit approximately $161 billion, a 13.6% increase over 2024 and the highest level recorded globally. The surge follows two years of consecutive growth after a decline in 2023, reflecting continued attraction of expatriate labor and expanding non-oil economic activity. Remittances now represent about 6.6% of the GCC region’s GDP, up from 6% the year before.
When benchmarked against other large economies, the GCC’s total exceeds the United States ($107 billion), Switzerland ($43 billion), Germany ($27 billion) and France ($21 billion). Beyond their monetary value, these flows bolster household consumption and social stability in receiving countries, underscoring the GCC’s role in global financial movements.
Why it matters
The record remittance flow highlights the GCC's growing economic influence and its impact on households worldwide.
