GCU students overwhelmingly vote no confidence in university leadership

Glasgow Caledonian University students passed a no-confidence motion against principal Mairi Watson and CFO Paul Queen after a bitter dispute over compulsory redundancies.

At a meeting of the GCU Students' Association's Student Voice committee, students overwhelmingly approved a no-confidence vote targeting principal Mairi Watson and chief financial officer Paul Queen. The decision follows an escalating conflict over compulsory staff redundancies, which many students argue are unjustified given the university's reported operating surplus and cash reserves. Dylan Welsh, who chaired the meeting, described a rare consensus of anger and agreement among participants, noting few abstentions and virtually no opposition.

Fourth-year student Diannon Andrews had earlier complained that the association's communications seemed to echo the university's stance rather than represent student interests. The motion, supported by GCU Student Solidarity and campus trade unions, marks a historic departure from the university's previously non-political student environment and signals a push for the association to more actively challenge senior management.

Why it matters

The vote shows rising student activism and could pressure university leaders to rethink staff cuts amid financial controversy.
