GE Vernova appoints former Rivian CFO Claire McDonough as its new finance chief

GE Vernova announced that Claire McDonough, who helped steer Rivian through its 2021 IPO, will become its CFO on Jan. 1, succeeding retiring Kenneth Parks.

GE Vernova confirmed that Claire McDonough, the former chief financial officer of Rivian who guided the company through its record-size 2021 IPO and a major Volkswagen partnership, will join the energy-technology firm in November and assume the CFO position on Jan. 1, replacing retiring Kenneth Parks. Parks will stay on as an advisor to ensure a smooth transition. At Rivian, finance vice-president Derek Mulvey is expected to act as interim CFO while the company searches for a permanent replacement.

Rivian’s stock dropped more than 6% intraday following the announcement, and GE Vernova’s shares fell about 3%. Market commentators highlighted Rivian’s unclear succession plan as a factor in the share decline, contrasting it with GE Vernova’s clearer leadership handoff. Analysts noted McDonough’s experience in cost discipline and capital-raising could benefit GE Vernova, while Rivian’s finance team faces a test of depth over the next two quarters as it pursues profitability and positive free cash flow.

Why it matters

The move reshapes leadership at two high-profile companies and influences investor confidence in their financial strategies.
