A sixth case under the POCSO Act has been filed against Gem Group chairman R Veerwani, bringing the total accusations to six.
The Special Investigation Team announced a sixth case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act against Gem Group chairman R Veerwani, following complaints from two more victims. This adds to five earlier cases, including charges based on a pen drive that allegedly shows Veerwani assaulting minor girls. Veerwani, along with his associate Shanthi, her husband Mahendra Simhan and former employee Kailash alias Ganesan, were arrested in late August, while Ganesan was taken into custody in late September for failing to report a video of the crime.
Police further detained three of Veerwani's drivers—Lazar, Parthiban and Babu—who are suspected of facilitating the recruitment of the minors. Searches of Veerwani’s residences yielded additional documents, and all arrested individuals are currently incarcerated at Puzhal Central Prison near Chennai.
Why it matters
The case highlights ongoing concerns about sexual exploitation by powerful business figures and the enforcement of child protection laws in India.
