Gen Z embraces sobriety, citing health, savings and dating preferences

A survey of 766 adults aged 21-29 shows that 24% of Gen Z abstain from alcohol, with many citing wellness, cost savings and relationship choices as key reasons.

A recent survey of 766 Gen Z adults conducted by Skyline Recovery Center revealed that 24% of respondents are completely sober, while another 21% practice moderate drinking and 6% identify as "sober curious." Health motivations top the list, with 46% saying fitness drives their reduced intake, followed by financial savings (37%) and mental-health concerns (29%). The study also notes a cultural shift in dating, with 69% of those who date preferring events with little or no alcohol.

Men report higher weekly consumption (5.1 drinks) compared to women (3.9 drinks), and the average drinker consumes about 4.4 drinks per one outlet, mostly on weekends. Strategies such as setting limits, pacing drinks, and designating alcohol-free days are common, and many report saving roughly $1,200 annually by drinking less. The findings contrast with older generations, where Millennials still have the highest drinking rates at 81%.

Why it matters

The trend shows a growing segment of young adults prioritizing health and finances over alcohol, reshaping social norms and market demand.
