Gen Z migration peaks in 2024 with California losing most residents

A LendingTree analysis using Census Bureau data shows that about one-quarter of Gen Z adults moved to another state or D.C. in 2024, with California experiencing the largest net loss.

LendingTree’s latest study, based on Census Bureau figures, finds that 23.9% of Gen Z adults changed residence across state lines in 2024, outpacing Millennials, Gen X and Baby Boomers. South Carolina added the most Gen Z newcomers with a net increase of 22,843, and Missouri followed with gains above 10,000. California suffered the steepest decline, losing 58,109 young adults, of whom 19,287 headed to Texas.

New Jersey and Illinois also recorded sizable net outflows. Matt Schulz of LendingTree said the mobility reflects college moves, new job opportunities and a search for more affordable living conditions, noting that high-cost states tend to lose more young residents.
