General Motors unveils larger 5.7-L and 6.6-L V8 engines for new pickups

General Motors announced the launch of two new Small Block V8 gasoline engines for its upcoming full-size trucks. The 5.7-liter L76, featuring a higher compression ratio, produces 408 horsepower and 580 newton-metres of torque, a modest increase over the outgoing 5.3-liter unit. The 6.6-liter L78 replaces the prior 6.2-liter engine, offering 488 horsepower and 679 newton-metres, making it 62 hp and 56 Nm stronger than its predecessor.

These engines will be installed in the new Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. The smaller V8 is tuned for maximum towing capability, up to 6.2 tonnes, while the larger version is geared toward buyers seeking higher performance, with a maximum towing rating of about 4.4 tonnes for chassis-cab configurations.
