Xenotransplantation using genetically modified pig organs has progressed from brief survival to multi-month outcomes. Early heart transplants in 2022 and 2023 kept recipients alive for weeks, while a pig liver transplant in China lasted 171 days before removal due to complications. The breakthrough came with pig kidney transplants: a 66-year-old American lived 271 days without dialysis before switching to a human kidney, and a Massachusetts General Hospital patient later surpassed nine months of kidney function. These results, published in The Lancet in September 2026, suggest pig organs could serve as temporary bridges for patients awaiting human donors, though immune rejection remains a key hurdle.
