Geno Smith sidelined with foot soreness for Jets' preseason debut

Geno Smith will not take the field in the Jets’ Friday night preseason contest against the Buccaneers because of foot soreness, according to a source. Coach Aaron Glenn had previously indicated that starters would be on the field, but the situation shifted before kickoff. The team could delay Smith’s preseason debut until the next Friday’s game in Pittsburgh.

The Jets acquired Smith from the Raiders in March, trading a sixth-round pick for him and a seventh-rounder. Smith, a former second-round pick of the Jets, has shown inconsistency in camp and struggled during recent joint practices. With Smith out, rookie Cade Klubnik is projected to receive the bulk of quarterback snaps, while backups Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook remain available. General manager Darren Mougey may still explore adding a veteran backup before the regular season begins on September 13.
