Gentari and BYD Malaysia sign MoU to test ultra-fast EV flash charging

Gentari Sdn Bhd and BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore deploying BYD’s Flash Charging system across Malaysia.

Gentari Sdn Bhd and BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd formalised a collaboration by signing an MoU to investigate the rollout of BYD’s Flash Charging technology in Malaysia. The study will focus on building high-capacity chargers capable of delivering about 400 kilometres of driving range in five minutes under optimal conditions, and will identify strategic locations along key intercity corridors. Both parties will evaluate the required power infrastructure, technical and commercial viability, and possible operating frameworks.

The agreement also opens avenues for joint renewable energy generation and battery storage projects, combining Gentari’s clean-energy experience with BYD’s expertise in batteries and fast-charging systems. Malaysia’s EV registrations have nearly doubled in the first nine months of 2026, while the government targets 30,000 public chargers by 2030. Executives Sushil Purohit, Liu Xueliang, Jacob Ma and BYD Group chairman Wang Chuanfu attended the signing in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Why it matters

Fast charging could accelerate EV adoption in Malaysia, supporting the country's goal of 30,000 public chargers by 2030.
