George Mazonakis death triggers criminal probe into Greece's unregulated private wellness clinics

The tragic loss of popular artist George Mazonakis during an unlawful plasma-extraction procedure has shone a light on the collapse of supervisory mechanisms in Greece’s private health sector. The incident occurred at an illegal clinic on Carnavadou Street in Kolonaki, prompting Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis to admit governmental liability and label the venue a "pseudo-clinic" lacking proper licensing. Athens’ Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a preliminary investigation against the Medical Association of Athens, probing potential criminal liability and negligence by its officials.

The case also revisits earlier efforts by former cyber-crime prosecutor Virginia Sakellaropoulou, who had ordered a comprehensive digital sweep of illegal wellness centres and unregistered medical products, leading to arrests and seizures before her mandate ended. With the two doctors involved now in custody, Mazonakis’s father has called for systemic change, and authorities are preparing to extend the inquiry to similar private clinics across Attica and the provinces.
