Georgia senators demand probe of alleged retaliation at South Georgia ICE center

Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff have asked the Department of Homeland Security to investigate possible retaliation against hunger-striking detainees at the Folkston ICE Processing Center.

In the first week of October, roughly 500 detainees at the Folkston ICE Processing Center started a hunger strike over alleged violations of U.S. law and poor conditions. Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff wrote to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and the agency’s inspector general, urging an immediate investigation into reports that custodial officers placed at least 13 hunger strikers in solitary confinement.

Their letter also asks for an unannounced inspection, disclosure of any medical evaluations, and information on whether detainees have been moved for hospital care or subjected to forced feeding. The senators’ concerns were heightened by the death of a 48-year-old Salvadoran man, Luis Sandoval, who was found with a ligature around his neck and died shortly after receiving medical attention. This is the second death at Folkston, following Jaspal Singh’s fatality in April 2024, which was linked to inadequate medical care. The facility is operated by the GEO Group, which holds a $47 million contract to expand the center to 3,000 beds.

Why it matters

The inquiry could expose violations of detainee rights and influence federal oversight of the nation’s largest immigration detention center.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

Left-leaning coverage emphasizes the detainee's death, hunger strike and alleged torture through force-feeding, while centrist coverage centers on the senators' demand for a probe into alleged retaliation and calls for an investigation.

The left emphasises

  • death of Luis Sandoval after being found with a ligature
  • hunger strike involving at least a dozen detainees demanding faster case processing and better conditions
  • claims that detainees are threatened with force-feeding, which critics label as torture

Possibly left out

  • Left-leaning coverage reports that force-feeding is labeled as torture, absent from centrist coverage
  • Centrist coverage reports senators' letters urging an investigation, absent from left-leaning coverage
