Georgian man detained for allegedly trying to sell uranium to foreign buyer
Georgia’s State Security Service arrested a citizen suspected of planning to sell uranium-238 to a foreign national for $700,000.
Georgia’s State Security Service announced the detention of a Georgian citizen accused of arranging the sale of uranium-238 to a foreign individual for $700,000. The operation was carried out jointly by the SSG’s Counterintelligence and Special Operations divisions. Authorities allege the suspect possessed the material and was preparing to hand it over to the foreign buyer.
Prosecutors will pursue charges under article 230 of the criminal code, which carries a maximum sentence of ten years. The arrest adds to a series of recent cases involving illicit uranium trafficking, including the February 2026 capture of two foreigners in Kutaisi and earlier seizures in Batumi and involving Chinese nationals.
