Gerakan urges probe into alleged teacher assault on 9-year-old student in Penang
Gerakan has asked the Penang Education Department to investigate a claim that a primary-school pupil was hit by a teacher, leaving bruises on his back and arm.
Gerakan’s complaints bureau head, Andrew Ooi, appealed to the Penang Education Department for an impartial inquiry into an alleged assault on a nine-year-old pupil from a Chinese primary school in the southwest district. The child reportedly suffered bruising on his left back and arm after being struck by a teacher. Ooi stressed that disciplinary actions must stay within proper limits and should not result in injury, urging the Education Ministry to tackle systemic problems like bullying, student mental health, and violence.
He suggested regular training for teachers on classroom management, stress control, child protection and counselling. The bureau also asked that the child and his family receive protection from any retaliation or discrimination. Identities of the student, teacher and school were kept confidential.
