Gérard Larcher wins a sixth term as President of the French Senate

The Senate re-elected Gérard Larcher for a sixth consecutive term, securing an absolute majority on the first ballot.

Gérard Larcher, the longtime LR senator representing the Yvelines, was confirmed for a sixth term as President of the French Senate after securing an absolute majority in the first round of voting. He received 203 out of 302 votes, leaving three opponents—Patrick Kanner of the Socialist group, Cécile Cukierman leading the Communist group, and Mélanie Vogel representing French citizens abroad—far behind. Colleagues described Larcher as a "monolith" of continuity in a turbulent political climate.

His close partnership with Bruno Retailleau was highlighted, and he signalled that he may aim for the 2027 presidential race, which he called the most important election of the Fifth Republic. Larcher first assumed the Senate presidency in 2008, succeeding former Labour Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. The result underscores his entrenched position within French politics.

Why it matters

The election reinforces Larcher's influence over French legislative affairs and hints at his future presidential ambitions.
