German AI Jet Claims Superiority Over Human Pilots in Simulated Dogfights
Helsing demonstrated that its AI-controlled CA-1 Europa jet outperformed veteran pilots in a simulated combat test, ahead of a planned flight next year.
At a demonstration in Munich attended by German Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger, Helsing's AI-driven CA-1 Europa unmanned combat jet defeated two experienced pilots in a series of simulated dogfights. The pilots, a former Mexican Air Force aviator and a former German military test pilot, could not overcome the AI called Centaur, which was trained using fully synthetic scenarios that allow rapid adjustment of terrain, weather and visibility.
Helsing, founded in 2021 and now employing roughly 1,300 people after acquiring Grob in 2025, highlighted that its AI operates only within a closed military network. The 11-metre, 4-ton jet is being prepared for its inaugural flight next year, following a $1.8 billion funding round in July.
