German armed forces deploy AI system to block extremist job applicants

The Bundeswehr now uses artificial intelligence to scan applicants' online activity and reject those with right-wing extremist ties.

The German armed forces have introduced an artificial-intelligence based screening process to filter out right-wing extremist applicants. The military intelligence agency MAD reviews the online profiles of every candidate, using the AI to detect extremist affiliations. When the software identifies a suspect, the applicant is automatically disqualified from recruitment.

Authorities argue that the measure strengthens the Bundeswehr's commitment to democratic principles and safeguards national security. The rollout follows growing concerns about extremist infiltration in security institutions. No individual cases have been publicly disclosed yet.

Why it matters
