German Army Turns to Gaming Expo to Attract Young Tech Talent

The Bundeswehr set up a booth at Gamescom, showcasing cyber-defence tools and VR experiences to recruit young gamers for its expanding force.

During Cologne’s Gamescom, the Bundeswehr returned for its seventh year with a stand featuring an olive-green Caracal vehicle, cyber-defence workstations and VR simulations of naval, pilot and air-traffic-control duties. Attendees were invited to try hacking challenges, test physical fitness, and attend a new career-counselling lounge. Lt. Gen. Robert Sieger stressed that the army seeks individuals comfortable with technology, not gamers who view war as a video game.

The German Peace Society - United War Resisters objected, claiming the military’s slogans exploit young people’s sense of adventure. The peace group will run an information booth on conscientious objection outside the exhibition. Reactions among visitors ranged from seeing the army as a respectable employer to deeming its presence morally questionable.

Why it matters

Germany’s recruitment drive at a major gaming event shows how militaries are targeting digital-native youth amid a push to expand the armed forces.
