German business confidence rises as government spending boosts outlook

The Ifo business climate index climbed for the sixth month in a row, reflecting improving sentiment in Germany’s economy amid higher public spending.

The latest Ifo business climate survey, which polls around 9,000 executives, recorded a sixth consecutive rise, signalling a strengthening of German economic sentiment. Officials attribute the boost to expanded state spending on infrastructure projects and defence. Although respondents view the present situation with some skepticism, their outlook for the coming months is more upbeat, with particular strength in the electronics and machine-building sectors.

Energy-heavy industries are still facing challenges, and high inflation continues to dampen consumer demand. Economists caution that rising oil, gas and electricity prices could pressure firms, while uncertainty in key export markets like France may also affect growth. Bond market reactions were muted, with German sovereign yields edging slightly higher.

Why it matters

Rising business confidence suggests Germany's economy may regain momentum despite inflation and energy costs.
