German corporate bankruptcies hit highest monthly level since 2013

In July, Germany recorded 2,373 company insolvencies, the most for any month since 2013, marking a rise from the same month last year.

According to data from the Statistisches Bundesamt, July registered 2,373 corporate insolvency proceedings in Germany, the highest monthly total since July 2013 when 2,459 cases were recorded. This uptick continues the upward trend observed in the first half of the year. The rise in business failures occurred even though the overall amount of creditor claims was lower than the previous year, suggesting that the bankruptcies involved relatively smaller enterprises.

Sector analysis showed the transport and storage industry experienced the highest insolvency rate, followed by hospitality and construction. In contrast, consumer insolvencies declined modestly, with 7,111 cases reported, a one-percent drop from the same month last year.

Why it matters
