German court to hear Madeleine McCann suspect on multiple new assault charges

Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, appears before an Oldenburg court facing at least six fresh charges, including assaults on police officers.

Christian Brueckner, long identified as the main suspect in the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann, is scheduled to appear before an Oldenburg court on multiple new charges. Prosecutors in Kiel have filed at least six counts, ranging from a recent verbal attack on a prison officer to two separate assaults on police officers in November 2025 and June 2026, one of which left an officer injured. If convicted, the court could impose a sentence of up to one year, though the case might also be dismissed.

Brueckner, who completed a seven-year term for a 2005 rape in the Algarve and remains under a five-year supervision order with an ankle monitor, is subject to continuous police monitoring. Authorities are also investigating an alleged altercation on private property in April. The developments keep the suspect in the spotlight as German prosecutors maintain that he likely murdered Madeleine, though no murder charge has yet been filed.

Why it matters

The case updates the legal status of the key suspect in a high-profile missing-child investigation, highlighting ongoing safety and justice concerns.
